Shin Min Ah and Lee Jun Ki have been confirmed for the leading roles in the upcoming MBC historical fusion drama, “Arang.”

Shin Min Ah and Lee Jun Ki have been confirmed as of Feburary 23, according to sources from MBC. “Arang” is to start airing in July. The drama will be set in the Joseon Dynasty period and will be about a female ghost (Shin Min Ah), who was murdered, appearing in front of a government official (Lee Jun Ki) to ask for vengeance toward her murderers. The government official will try to appease her wishes. The drama will try to appeal to the viewers by having a historical horror fusion, which is especially fitting for the summer season.

This will be Shin Min Ah’s come back to the small screen after two years since her highly popular drama, “My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho” in 2010. Shin Min Ah was confirmed first for this upcoming drama and Lee Jun Ki, who was discharged on February 16, recently agreed to join the cast. This will be Shin Min Ah’s first sageuk drama and Lee Jun Ki’s first drama since his discharge, which further elevates anticipation.

On top of the anticipation that comes from the cast, the drama will be produced by Kim Sang Ho PD, who worked with “Can You Hear My Heart,” “Soul,” and “Fantasy Couple.”

  1. This is great news indeed!

But in my opinion, I won’t consider this one as a “comeback in the small screen,” but instead, I prefer to see it as the “continuation of her drama season.” Because as I’ve observed, Ms. Min Ah doesn’t make dramas within 2 consecutive years. Please refer to the list below:

    2001 – Beautiful Days
    2003 – Punch
    2005 – A Love To Kill
    2007 – The Devil (Mawang)
    2010 – My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho
    2012 – Arang

Unless I’m missing some info, I guess this is pretty accurate.
So basing on this current trend, her next drama will probably be created on 2014 or 2015 even. Well, nevertheless, these dramas are worth the wait anyways.

But I’d be so glad if my analysis is wrong and Ms. Min Ah would make another drama next year and the year after that and another after that one… and so forth and so on. Well I’m sure that so many people would be so happy too if that would be the case ; )

By the way, can you guys enlighten me on something?
As I understand it, “sageuk” is somewhat based on history and uses traditional Korean settings, plots and costumes… right? Are sageuk films based only on real history (non-fiction) or can they be also based on historical myths and legends (fiction) as well? I got confused on the article’s statement, “This will be Shin Min Ah’s first sageuk drama,” because some chapters and scenes on “My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho” were also based on traditional Korean settings, plots and costumes. Miho came from the historical Korea of more than 500 years ago. So, would those chapters and scenes qualify as sageuk? If so, does it mean that Ms. Min Ah already had a sageuk drama?

Please help me sort this out so I can have a better understanding.
Thanks for the time guys! I really appreciate it ; )

    • It’s actually true observation, because Minah generally does dramas every two years with a break in between by just focusing on CFs and coupled with a film. MGIAG wouldn’t be considered a sageuk film, because in the traditional sense of the genre it is only really applied to historical period films; so MGIAG used some traditional folklore and myths but it was set in the present.

    • maybe based on korean history but changed the history a little。。
actually some fans worry that this drama not Mina ‘s choice but AM’s .
cause Mina always say she want challenge different roles, but this new drama’s role a bit like gumiho。
Anyhow ,i believe Mina’s choice。just like korean fans administrator kay.z said Mina not a new star anymore ,so she can choose drama by herself 。
am here just hope korean fans try their best help Mina when the drama show on the screen 。
us overseas fans also try our best introduce this new drama in our own country。

  2. Nice . I can’t wait to watch this . though Lee Jun Ki isn’t my type, and I prefer more with Lee Seung Gi . I Know this will get many Awards specially Shin Min Ah is in it .
